keeping poor people poor for purpose.......

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Evicted reimagines the debate on poverty, making a "provocative and compelling" (NPR) argument about why it persists in America: because the rest of us benefit from it.

"Urgent and accessible . . . Its moral force is a gut punch."--The New Yorker

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2023: The Washington Post, Time, Esquire, Newsweek, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Elle, Salon, Lit Hub, Kirkus Reviews

The United States, the richest country on earth, has more poverty than any other advanced democracy. Why? Why does this land of plenty allow one in every eight of its children to go without basic necessities, permit scores of its citizens to live and die on the streets, and authorize its corporations to pay poverty wages?

In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, and original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor. Those of us who are financially secure exploit the poor, driving down their wages while forcing them to overpay for housing and access to cash and credit. We prioritize the subsidization of our wealth over the alleviation of poverty, designing a welfare state that gives the most to those who need the least. And we stockpile opportunity in exclusive communities, creating zones of concentrated riches alongside those of concentrated despair. Some lives are made small so that others may grow.

Elegantly written and fiercely argued, this compassionate book gives us new ways of thinking about a morally urgent problem. It also helps us imagine solutions. Desmond builds a startlingly original and ambitious case for ending poverty. He calls on us all to become poverty abolitionists, engaged in a politics of collective belonging to usher in a new age of shared prosperity and, at last, true freedom.

Some 50 million people in the United States live in poverty today—and over 108 million people survive on less than $55,000 a year. Despite having the largest economy on earth, poverty in the US is often grinding and brutal.

From millions who live without running water or reliable power, to countless children who experience food insecurity and homelessness. The data on poverty only becomes exacerbated when race is taken into account. In 2019, the median white household had a net worth of $188,200, compared with $24,100 for the median Black household.

Matthew Desmond joins The Chris Hedges Report to discuss his new book, 'Poverty, by America,' which delves into the reality of American poverty not as a condition earned by individuals' poor choices, but a phenomenon produced by the knowing and unknowing choices of the wealthy.

Matthew Desmond is the Maurice P. During Professor of Sociology at Princeton University. His primary teaching and research interests include urban sociology, poverty, race and ethnicity, organizations and work, social theory, and ethnography. In 2018, Desmond’s Eviction Lab at Princeton University published the first-ever dataset of more than 80 million American eviction records.

The Lab currently is pursuing nearly a dozen lines of inquiry analyzing this groundbreaking dataset that will help scholars, policymakers, and advocates better understand eviction, housing insecurity, and poverty.

THE AMERICAN MALAISE IS A SELF-INFLICTED COMPLEX OF SUPERIORITY. AMERICAN PRESIDENTS ARE THE FOGHORNS WITH VARIOUS STYLISTIC SUCCESS IN PROMOTING THE AMERICAN BULLSHIT (BS). THE MAIN MALAISE IN AMERICA IS THE DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN RICH AND POOR. AS EXPLAINED IN THE ARTICLE ABOVE, THIS DIFFERENTIAL IS DELIBERATELY MAINTAINED. THE POOR ARE MOSTLY THE DESCENDANTS OF SLAVES.

IN FRANCE, THE "MALAISE" (MAL EASE) IS DUE TO THE DESCENDANTS OF MIGRANTS FROM POOR AFRICAN COUNTRIES IN A SIMILAR PROPORTION TO THE SLAVES IN THE USA. IN GERMANY, THE PROBLEM COULD ARISE THOUGH THE SITUATION IS DIFFERENT: MOST OF THE MIGRANT POPULATION IS FROM TURKEY. THEY HOLD DUAL NATIONALITY AND TURKEY IS A REASONABLY RICH INDEPENDENT COUNTRY, COMPARED TO COLONIAL AFRICA.

THE LATEST ARRIVALS (REFUGEES) TO EUROPE COME FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS AND ELITES OF UKRAINE. THIS CAN POSE ANOTHER PROBLEM, WHICH WAS SEEN OFTEN IN AUSTRALIA: SAY PROFESSORS OR THIS OR THAT ENDING UP CLEANING THE STREETS WITH A BROOM... WHILE THE COUNTRIES HAVE TO FIND EXTRA RESOURCES TO FEED AND EMPLOY SUCH INFLUX.

EVERY AMERICAN PRESIDENT HAS HAD TO PUMP THE BULLSHIT WITHOUT THE BULLSHIT GOING OVER THE BUCKET... BIDEN'S PROBLEM HAS BEEN THAT HE HAS BEEN CHOSEN BECAUSE HE HAS BEEN PUMPING BULLSHIT SINCE HE ENTERED POLITICS. IT'S STARTING TO TAINT AND DEBASE THE POSITION. NOTHING TO DO WITH DEMOCRATS OR REPUBLICANS, THE FOGHORNS HAVE TO PUMP THE TUNER TO 11 — A TUNER CONTROLLED BY THE PENTAGON AND ITS POPULATION OF WARMONGERS.... TRUMP'S PROBLEM IS THAT HE PUMPS UP THE BULLSHIT WHILE EXPOSING THE CONTRICKS OF THE ESTABLISHMENT — THE PENTAGON.

The Biden Malaise: How America Bounces Back from Joe Biden's Dismal Repeat of the Jimmy Carter Years

“In the style of a dogged prosecutor, Strassel builds a devastating case against Joe Biden’s record…THE BIDEN MALAISE is must-read ahead of 2024, as conservative voters prepare to make consequential choices.”―Guy Benson, Fox News & Townhall.com

The bestselling author of Resistance (At All Costs) and The Intimidation Game argues that Joe Biden, like Jimmy Carter before him, has mired the country in weakness, inflation and political unease.

Whether in politics or policy, the parallels between the Biden and Carter presidencies are now beyond striking. Two presidents—separated by nearly 50 years—beset by the same domestic and foreign policy morasses, politically swamped by a national ennui. However, THE BIDEN MALAISE will examine why such claims overlook important nuances that show President Biden’s blunders are ultimately far worse.

Our current president inherited a better situation along with the lessons of what not to do from Carter's governance. Biden, captive to an ascendent progressive wing of his party, doubled down on Carter’s mistakes and created crises that were as avoidable as they are now severe. From soaring energy prices and inflation to humiliating foreign policy errors, the Biden administration's political mess is self-imposed. His political handling of these fiascoes—like Carter—has only made his situation worse. Democrats risk a public backlash of the sort that opened the way to the Reagan Revolution.

Award-winning and bestselling journalist Kim Strassel offers a formula for the GOP to capitalize from this mayhem; one that rekindles the bold and reformist approach of the 80s and 90s, an aspirational agenda that puts Americans back in control of their destiny on issues ranging from healthcare, to energy, to entitlements. THE BIDEN MALAISE is a penetrating look at our current political climate and a book that explains how the GOP can use this opportunity to elect a leader who can restore faith in American exceptionalism.

grains.....

ST. PETERSBURG (Sputnik) - Europe, which will be flooded with migrants from low-income countries that rely on grain exports from Ukraine and Russia, will suffer the most from the suspension of the grain deal, international experts told Sputnik on Wednesday.

On Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia’s participation in the grain deal had been terminated with immediate effect, although it would return to it if commitments toward Moscow were fulfilled.

"Europe may soon experience a devastating migration crisis following Russia's decision to leave the deal. The biggest victim of higher grain prices and shortages in the developing countries will be the European Union," Yusuf Alabarda, a Turkish political expert and a representative of the M5 Strategy Journal, told Sputnik.

"We know very well that Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and a couple of other African countries are mainly dependent on Ukrainian and Russian grain imports. Europe will be overwhelmed by migrants fleeing hunger."

Eugen Schmidt of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, in commentary for Sputnik, also predicted a dire impact of the deal’s suspension for the European Union.

"Unfortunately, Western countries are deliberately provoking hunger in regions dependent on Ukrainian and Russian grain supplies, which will inevitably incite huge hungry masses to storm European borders," Schmidt said.

"It is unlikely that the ruling political elites of the EU do not understand what the failure of the grain deal threatens them with, but apparently they do not care at all about the impending hunger and the further flooding of Europe with migrants."

The German lawmaker added that today Europe, and especially Germany, is not independent in its foreign policy and acts only in the interests of "external forces, which has an extremely negative effect on the state of affairs in Germany itself."

As several key European nations, including Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria, have already called on Russia to restore its participation in the grain initiative, the expert called on them to take responsibility on their behalf for the suspension of the agreement as Russia’s concerns have not been met.

no funny business.....

The Russian military issued a new navigational warning for the Black Sea on Wednesday, declaring certain areas in its international waters to be“temporarily unsafe” for vessels. Apart from that, the military advised seafarers against attempting to reach Ukraine’s ports, stating that all vessels heading there will be treated as potential carriers of war goods starting from Thursday.

Therefore, the flag state of a ship attempting to reach the Ukrainian Black Sea ports will be deemed as “taking part in the Ukrainian conflict on the side of the Kiev regime,” the Russian Defense ministry said in a statement.

The military said it also declared certain areas in the international waters of the Black Sea to be “temporarily unsafe” for navigation. The areas are located in the north-west and south-east of the waterway, the military noted, adding that all the necessary navigational warnings have already been published as required under existing procedures.

“With the termination of the Black Sea Initiative and the abolition of the maritime humanitarian corridor, from 00:00 Moscow time on July 20, 2023, all ships en route to Ukrainian ports in the Black Sea will be considered potential carriers of military cargo,” the military insisted.

The new restrictions de-facto re-impose the Russian naval blockade on Ukraine, lifted under the so-called Black Sea grain deal in July 2022. The agreement, signed with mediation by the UN and Türkiye, enabled the safe shipment of Ukrainian grain through Black Sea corridors amid the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. Moscow withdrew from the deal on Monday, citing the West’s failure to keep any of the promises made to Russia under the agreement, including re-enabling exports of grain and fertilizers from the country.

Over the past two days, Russia has also ramped up its cruise missile and suicide drone attacks on Ukraine, extensively striking targets in and around Odessa, the key port city of the country. The strikes come in retaliation to the new Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Crimean Bridge, which coincided with the termination of the grain deal.

grain embargo.....

Five EU member states will ask Brussels for an extension of the ban on imports of Ukrainian grain to the bloc, Polish Agriculture Minister Robert Telus said on Wednesday, following a meeting with representatives from Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Bulgaria.

According to Reuters, Telus and his counterparts from the four nations signed a common declaration regarding the extension of the ban until at least the end of the year, which they will present in talks with the European Commission.

“But also in the agreement is our joint declaration that we are very open to transit,” Telus was quoted as saying by the outlet.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, meanwhile, warned that his country may ban products from Ukraine unilaterally if the EU fails to come up with mechanisms and regulations that will protect Polish farmers when the official EU ban expires.

The five EU member states maintain restrictions on imports of Ukrainian wheat, corn, rapeseed, and sunflower oil. The curbs were introduced by Brussels in May to protect farmers from the influx of cheap Ukrainian grain, which flooded markets after the EU suspended customs duties following the launch of Russia’s military operation last year. The embargo still allows the transit of Ukrainian grain through the five countries, and is due to expire on September 15.
