Ukraine’s President Vladimir Zelensky has stepped out of line in his relationships with his foreign backers, Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has said. She was referring to his attempt to nudge NATO into retaliating against Russia for a deadly incident in Poland.

“Zelensky sits in a bunker and cannot understand why his version about a ‘Russian missile in Poland’ was dismissed even by the worst of Russophobes,” she wrote on social media on Wednesday. The president, she added, should realize that his job is “to do the dirty work and not tell bosses what they should do.”

The remark came after the incident on Tuesday evening in the village of Przewodow on Poland’s border with Ukraine, in which two local residents were killed. Zelensky rushed to declare it “a Russian missile strike on [NATO] collective security” and urged Western nations to “take action.”

Some sources in Poland initially claimed that two Russian missiles had caused the deaths, while the Polish Foreign Ministry referred to a single projectile, describing it as “Russian-made.”

The incident in Przewodow occurred as Moscow launched a massive barrage of missiles on key energy and military infrastructure in Ukraine. The Russian Defense Ministry denied targeting any sites in the area near the Polish village. The military later stated that images of the debris available publicly clearly identified it as a Ukrainian S-300 interceptor.

NATO members appear to have arrived at the same conclusion, according to reports in Western media. The US-led bloc reportedly tracked the missile’s path from Ukraine. US President Joe Biden told the media that, judging by the trajectory, Russia was unlikely to be responsible.

The US does not possess any new information that would suggest a missile that killed two people in Poland on Tuesday was not Ukrainian, the National Security Council’s spokesperson, Adrienne Watson, said in a statement on Wednesday.

Washington remains convinced that Russia is to blame, she added. Meanwhile, Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky continues to insist that his country was not behind the fatal incident.

"We have seen nothing that contradicts President [Andrzej] Duda’s preliminary assessment that this explosion was most likely the result of a Ukrainian air defense missile that unfortunately landed in Poland," Watson explained, adding that the US would not carry out its own investigation of the incident and would rely on the results of the ongoing Polish probe.

Washington is "in close touch" with both Warsaw and Kiev and has "full confidence" in Poland's investigative efforts, the spokeswoman added, vowing to provide new information on the incident "as it becomes available."

Despite agreeing with Duda’s conclusion that the missile was most likely a Ukrainian one, the White House still believes it is Moscow and not Kiev that should bear the "ultimate" blame for the incident, regardless of the probe results.

"It is clear that the party ultimately responsible for this tragic incident is Russia, which launched a barrage of missiles on Ukraine specifically intended to target civilian infrastructure," the statement read, adding that Ukraine has "every right to defend itself."

On Tuesday, Russia launched a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine. At the time, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that 85 missiles had struck Ukrainian territory, while Energy Minister German Galushchenko called it the "most massive shelling" of the nation’s energy system.

Late on Tuesday, Polish media reported on a blast that hit a grain dryer inside the country not far from the Ukrainian border, killing two people. The blast was attributed to a "stray missile" strike. Kiev immediately rushed to accuse Russia of being behind the incident and called on NATO to retaliate. The Russian Defense Ministry denied any responsibility. Poland and the US took a more reserved stance, as they avoided pointing fingers at any side.

On Wednesday, Ukraine admitted firing an air defense missile near the Polish border in an attempt to intercept a Russian projectile, according to CNN.

Kremlin Spokesman on Missile Incident in Poland: US, NATO Actions Were Root Cause

Commenting on the White House's statement about Russia's responsibility for a recent incident when missiles landed in Poland, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the US and NATO actions were the root cause of everything that is happening now.

White House National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Wednesday that the United States believes Russia is "ultimately responsible" for the incident due to its special military operation in Ukraine.

“The Americans speak in the paradigm 'if something hadn't happened [before], this wouldn't happen [now].' Then it makes sense to rewind. And we will see the root cause of everything - it’s NATO and the United States at the helm,” Peskov said, commenting on the White House statement.

Ukraine wants to make a spectacle out of peace negotiations, instead of earnestly pursuing a diplomatic resolution to the current conflict, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Thursday, citing a Moscow source.

The report comes after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said on Wednesday that he would like to have negotiations with Russia in “a public format,” rather than behind closed doors.

“Russia has not changed the position that it is open to negotiations – unlike Kiev, which first requested [negotiations], then abandoned them, and now is ready to renew them but is putting forward inappropriate preconditions,” the source was quoted as saying.

“Kiev’s new idea of ‘public’ negotiations, which is an attempt to turn diplomacy into a TV show, proves the unseriousness of its intentions.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied on Thursday that the notion of public negotiations “doesn’t exist.”

“One thing is obvious: The Ukrainian side doesn’t want any talks,” he added.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky could be “lying on purpose to get us into a war,” Fox News host Tucker Carlson declared on Wednesday night. Zelensky’s refusal to admit that a Ukrainian missile caused a fatal explosion in Poland makes him “not worth supporting,”Carlson suggested.

Zelensky “was commanding the US to lead the Third World War immediately” after the blast, Carlson told his viewers. “The only problem is that it was completely and utterly wrong.”

The Ukrainian leader described the explosion, which killed two people, as a Russian attack on NATO territory and called on the West to put Russia “in its place” in response. Anonymous US intelligence officials seconded his claims in statements to the press.

Within hours, the leadership of the US, NATO, and Poland had all publicly stated that the explosion was caused by a Ukrainian anti-air missile.

Zelensky doubled down. “I have no doubt that this is not our missile,” he said in a video address. “I believe that it was a Russian missile, based on our military reports.”

“That’s not only untrue,” Carlson said. “It’s a lie that could get millions of Americans killed. So you have to ask yourself, is it time to stop backing this guy? Could the risk be too high? He’s lying on purpose to get us into a war?”

“Maybe he’s not worth supporting in the first place. Maybe he’s just another corrupt Eastern European strongman in a tracksuit, getting as rich as he can on American handouts.”

Carlson has been a long-time critic of the US’ support for Zelensky, arguing that Ukraine is not democratic, and that intervening in its conflict with Russia is not in the US’ national security interest.

Zelensky has since walked back his claims, saying on Thursday that Kiev doesn’t “know for 100%”what happened.
