Von der Leyen also said that the European Union is going to finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment to Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has slammed Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik and suggested banning them in the European Union.

On Sunday, she declared that the EU will close its airspace to Russian aircraft and is seeking to ban Russian state-owned media in the bloc.

"In another unprecedented step, we will ban in the EU the Kremlin's media machine. The state-owned Russia Today and Sputnik, as well as their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin's war and to sow division in our union," she said.

In response, Sputnik suggested that the EU might as well ban the Internet.

"We advise the European Union to not stop at half measures and just ban the Internet outright," the news agency retorted.

Von der Leyen also said the EU is going to finance the purchase and delivery of weapons and other equipment to Ukraine and is hitting Russia's ally Belarus with sanctions over the ongoing fighting in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine on Thursday morning, after the Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics requested to defend them from Kiev aggression. Russian servicemen are expected to leave the country after the operation, the Russian Ministry of Defense said.

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have not yet begun and will not begin soon, a source close to the matter told Sputnik late on Sunda.

The meeting place was changed at the request of the Ukrainian side, the source noted. Another source said that the Ukrainian delegation, which will consist of about five people, is still on its way to the site.

Kiev Delegation Headed to Belarus Via Poland, For Talks With Russia - Source

MINSK (Sputnik) - A Ukrainian delegation that is expected to hold talks with Russia is headed to Belarus via Poland and the meeting is expected to start on Monday morning, a source close to the organizers of the talks told Sputnik.

"The talks will be held on Monday morning due to the fact that, fearing for their lives, the Ukrainian delegation did not take the direct route, through Gomel, but will enter [Belarus] through Poland, at the ‘Warsaw Bridge’ checkpoint. They are taking a huge detour," the source said on Sunday.

the threats of history...

What would the United States do if it had a country on its borders that was a member of a threatening military alliance?

“We should learn from history,” the chorus sings as news floods in on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But the only history lesson they appear to have attended is the one on Neville Chamberlain, Hitler, Sudetenland and appeasement.

Here’s a potted history of a couple of other lessons that should be added to the Western curriculum.

  1. The Crimean War. Russian Tsar Nicholas 1 saw himself as the defender of Orthodox Christians, especially those living under Muslim Ottoman rule. Nicholas 1 asserted that these Christians had his protection and when his demands were not met in July 1853 Russian troops occupied Ottoman territory, in what is now Rumania.

Britain and France opportunistically joined the Ottomans in declaring war on Russia. British and French fleets entered the Black Sea and attacked Russia’s main naval base, Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula.  A number of battles on the Peninsula including the Battle of Balaclava, eventually saw Sevastopol fall after eleven months fighting. The Treaty of Paris brought an end to the war on 30 March 1856.

  1. Russia entered World War I when Austria-Hungary declared war on its ally, Serbia. The German Empire joined Austria-Hungary, declaring war on Russia and the Ottoman Turks supported the Germans. On the Eastern Front the Russians upheld their duty to their Western allies but suffered huge losses. According to Gregory Carleton, Professor or Russian Studies at Tufts University, without this support the West would never have won the war. But there was no Western gratitude, Britain, France and America fought not just to beat Germany, but to weaken Russia as much as possible. The losses in the war led to the abdication of the Tsar and the Russian Revolution.
  2. World War II saw the Russians fight fierce battles against the invading Germans with the initial rout of Soviet forces in Ukraine. The German offensive was halted at Stalingrad. Sevastopol in Crimea and Stalingrad were awarded the title “hero city” for their outstanding resistance during the war.

At Kursk – the greatest land battle the world has ever seen – the Soviets defeated the Germans. By way of comparison, in the Normandy landings 91 Allied divisions faced 65 German divisions across a 250-mile front; at the same time 560 Soviet divisions faced 235 German divisions across 2000 miles.

Russian sacrifices were recognised by Churchill who presented a sword to Stalin as a token of homage of the British people for the resistance at Stalingrad.

The Soviet Union is estimated to have lost 27 million lives in the war.

I assume that the chorus is aware of Napoleon’s 1812 invasion of Russia if for no other reason than they’ve heard of Tchaikovsky’s overture.

With this history of invasions from the West is anyone really surprised that the Russians see NATO’s expansion into the East as a threat?

And if Putin couldn’t be trusted with his “no-invasion” statements, he’s in good company in the Lying Leaders Club.

The Americans couldn’t be trusted with their promises to the Russians, such as Soviet leader Michael Gorbachev at the time of the reunification of Germany, that there would be no NATO expansion to the East.

According to US documents, on three occasions US Secretary of State James Baker led the Soviet leaders to believe that German reunification would not see NATO spread to the East.  Baker, for example wrote to German Chancellor, Helmut Kohl saying: “And then I put the following question to him [Gorbachev]. Would you prefer to see a united Germany outside of NATO, independent and with no U.S. forces or would you prefer a unified Germany to be tied to NATO, with assurances that NATO’s jurisdiction would not shift one inch eastward from its present position? He answered that the Soviet leadership was giving real thought to all such options [….] He then added, ‘Certainly any extension of the zone of NATO would be unacceptable.’” Baker added in parentheses, for Kohl’s benefit, “By implication, NATO in its current zone might be acceptable.”

The Americans were not the only ones who gave the Russians assurances. In March 1991 British Prime Minister John Major was asked by the Soviet defence minister, Marshal Dmitry Yazov, about eastern Europe’s interest in joining NATO. Major, according to the diaries of the British ambassador to Moscow, Rodric Braithwaite, assured him “nothing of that sort will ever happen.”

And Putin is not the only Russian leader to have objected.

In September 1993, Russian President Boris Yeltsin wrote to US President Bill Clinton expressing his concerns about the possibility of NATO expanding to the East.

But at that time Russia was in too weak a position to do anything about it.

Since then NATO has accepted 14 countries in Eastern and South Eastern Europe into its alliance.

Five NATO countries now border Russia.

If Ukraine was a member Russia would have an additional 2,295 kilometres of NATO land and sea border, and the Ukraine border would be only 490 kilometres from Moscow.

What would the United States do if it had a country on its borders that was a member of a threatening military alliance?

NATO should be disbanded...

White House spokesman Jen Psaki claims that NATO and Ukraine do not pose a threat to Russia.

"At no point has Russia been under threat from NATO, has Russia been under threat from Ukraine," she told ABC on Sunday.

ABC clarifies that this is how Psaki commented on the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to transfer the containment forces of the Russian army to a special mode of combat duty.

She also announced the readiness of the United States to send more humanitarian, economic and military assistance to Ukraine.

In response to a question about U.S. readiness to take action against Russia's energy sector, Psaki assured that all such options "are on the agenda."

Earlier on Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff Valery Gerasimov, said that "top officials of leading NATO countries make aggressive statements about our country, so I order the defense minister and the chief of the General Staff to put the Russian army's deterrence forces on a special alert."

NATO was created AGAINST RUSSIA during the "Cold War"... If NATO and Ukraine do not pose a threat to Russia, then it is time to disband NATO — thus it is useless for Ukraine to join NATO. NATO is a deceptive organism built to actually threaten Russia and destroy Russia to the core. The US deception through Psaki is mind-boggling...

HERE I must apologise for appearing as a Putin apologist. History has shown that something had to happen: Ukraine not to join NATO and to respect the Minsk Agreements. Ukraine under order from the US and NATO refused. Every Russian should fear Ukraine becoming a member of NATO.

Presently, most of the "opinion" pieces in the Western media show very few civilians being injured or killed in Ukraine — BUT A LOT OF FEAR and interviews of people fearing their country won't be theirs

I trust that History will be kind to them if NATO (in a defacto situation) gets out of the Ukrainians' mind and the Misk Agreements are observed. It would have beeen simple decisions to make.

But the West never respected Russia...
