the darkness that descends upon democracy...

 hairhair

This website is called yourdemocracy — YOUR-DEMOCRACY… I hope that is is not beyond the folks who thus read this website to see that de-mo-cra-cy is in trouble, once more… It always was, despite the flux of hope that props its head from time to time, despair at personal and social construct seems to be the order of the day.

Democracy is quite a new system of government in its present format. Barely 100 years young in most countries and it’s not even a born child in others. In the USA, democracy has suffered from racism, sexism, corruption and highway robbery at the highest of echelons of the system since its inception. People who expose the corruption of the system get shot: the Kennedys, Martin Luther King to name the most famous of the victims...

It’s likely that many young people today do not care much about this system, because it often fails to provide them with proper jobs or supports, and few would understand the complex machinations which de-mo-cra-cy are based upon.

The flux of the “democratic ideals” for the improvement of humanity has presently shifted towards a pseudo-form of fascism in most countries, including inside the USA. The US should be leading on democratic rights — or should they? And do they? By what criteria should we value the USA’s democratic actions say versus those of Germany or those of France? Is it because the USA have more weapons than everybody else?… Covid-19 did not help, not so much for being a nasty bug, but for our generally ill-thought out responses to it, which mixed sciences with politics. These responses have not been designed to help democracy but to destroy it by pouring despotic values from the top.

The thrust of historical context has also damaged the idealisation of democracy. Most humans are relative to their own source “codes” — their own refuge in their country of origin, in which language, religion and traditions are the limiting factors of their own concept of democracy — acceptance, or (often imposed) rejection.

"For now, the US, Poland, Hungary land on 'backsliding democracies’ list…

A Sweden-based think tank has warned that the US and some eastern EU members are facing declines in civil liberties and other freedoms. In Asia, authoritarianism in China is casting an ever-larger shadow. “ So?

For many Chinese, the paternalistic style of their government has brought them more hope than the US's floundering democracy is bringing to their own citizens, especially when the Democrats are trying to eradicate dissent — meaning the destruction of the republican Party via very unsavoury vengeful means. At the core of this “vengeance” are a group of profiteers, from Pelosi to the President himself, who got there by suppression of truth by the compliant media.

When Biden labels Nicaragua’s election as a ‘pantomime’ one has to worry about the sanity of his shaving mirror… Yes, Biden (the USA boffins at the CIA, et al) does not like the result. So? According to many proper sources, the majority of Nicaraguans like (and voted for) Daniel Ortega. Biden is part of the same cabal that installed dictators through the region to stop people voting for governments with a leftist tendency. Are leftist government more democratic than the USA? Some are, some are not, but in general, the leftist government help the poor to become educated and be part of a “bourgeoisie" that eventually boots the leftists out. It’s often a price to pay for being “efficient" and not being robbed by the banana-hunters from the US of A...

The daily violence in the USA is also a factor of democratic anger and despair amongst many citizens. The number of prisoners in US jails is beyond the pale. The police and US justice system are appalling. Meanwhile the US is trying to impose their style of democratic hubris everywhere, not so much for understanding the people “they conquer", but for turning the rest of the world into gross hamburger-eaters and fat-arsed fizzy drinks consumers… This is all to make a buck, and control the agenda of “freedom”. Freedom is not yours to choose, but that of the US to give you, like an enema.

So, why is US democracy becoming a rabble of loonies versus losers led by old men who have never understood any democratic values? Say Joe Biden invented the PATRIOT ACT, which is as anti-democratic as can be, and now pursues the Republicans through the courts because of the "6th of January”… These American fuckers have not even been able to “properly” and openly solve 9/11, nor the JFK assassination. On both occasions, the truth has not been made public, because they are afraid of it... And why? Because the democratic ideals of the USA are manipulated by the CIA, the NSA and other “intelligence” agencies, plus a compliant media that licks the bottoms of the corporates on behalf of both major parties that survive on the largess of lobbyists… The system killed JFK, not loony Oswald.

THIS IS NOT DEMOCRACY — no matter how you look at which ends of the spy-glass or those of the toilet bowl, this isn’t democracy.

The system only works because of this “official” corruption… Sure, there are plenty of willing and genuine people in the system but they get absorbed and tainted by the corrupted and the criminals, who are beyond a critical mass that makes the USA a joke of deceptive crap merchandisers. Our own government in Australia is on par with this stupid hubris — or even more pitiful... It’s time for a change but this won’t happen. The last US choice was between a failed old loony real estate agent and an older dithering nasty guy riddled with guilt, who supported stupid wars under false pretences.

Meanwhile, the threat of REAL war is looming large again, because the old guy is displeased with the other world players who don’t bend the knees in front of the emperor he thinks he is, on planet Earth. So a lot of LIES AND PURPOSE DRIVEN DRIVEL is pushed forth, with some rattle of the big sabre. The military men are having an orgasm. And so forth… Let’s say the attitude of Joe Biden in Ukraine was a disgrace: he should have been facing the international courts. But fear not, Joe's disgraceful deceit promoted — not the democratic rights of Ukraine in which Biden supported the Nazis — nor the ideal of democracy at large which had been manipulated beforehand by the USA, but it promoted the mastered INFLUENCE for control BY THE US on the rest of the world, using CASH THE US DO NOT REALLY HAVE. It’s empire building by debt — not for the people, but for the machine that rules over the Washington express: the swamp. The swamp is assortment of rich people and major investors in a MILITARY-based system that thrives on public debt designed to make other countries and the US nation (you) pay into the rich US private coffers.

Your democratic vote for one or the other nongs in this construct is worth less that a rat’s fart. I know you know… Yet voting is your only weapon… Protest — and the media will fall on you like a ton of bricks… And this won’t change in the near future. In Australia, the present government is led by an idiotic cantankerous liar who is supported by the major media (especially the Murdoch media), because of a bent ideology and false freedom, which supposed to be CONservative but is the pits of democratic value, even when considering tight-arsed traditional values…

So… Where to from here? Bash our head against a brick wall? Keep pushing our own views till we die? Do we suffer from delusions in our arteries?

Is the democratic sickness temporary or part of the process, in which we have to argue for our own piece of gristle? Meanwhile a so-called DEMOCRATIC country like the USA is KEEPING ASSANGE IN A UK PRISON !. If this is not anti-democratic, what is? And our Australian psycho government, plus that of the UK are part of this anti-democratic action through biased courts that have NO JUSTICE VALUE… Talk about “kangaroo courts”!!!!! ScoMo is an idiot...

Let’s hope that Ukraine respects the Minsk agreements and that Taiwan decides of its own accord to come to terms with being part of China mainland slowly WITHOUT BEING INTERFERED WITH BY THE USA. I could be naive, but I think this would be more profitable to Taiwan than try to be a pseudo-bit of a failing US empire with big boots and anti-democratic hubris. Time to pack our bags. Remember Vietnam and Afghanistan...

These decisions would do the world a service. The alternative is crap: start building your nuke-shelter today.

The cartoon at top is crap. I don’t know where it came from. I thought it illustrated well the delusions of being ruled. The kings were the swamp of the times and no, the French revolution was not like it is depicted. May be I missed the element of satire… Yes, on second thought, it is a very very satirical cartoon… far more than I can muster...

Kick ScoMo out !

by invitation only...

The US Department of State has unveiled the list of 110 countries, delegations and territories invited to participate in the "Summit for Democracy" which would be hosted by US President Joe Biden. The list was published on the official website of the department.

The announced purpose of the event is to halt a retreat from democracy and prevent the "erosion" of rights and freedoms around the world. Russia and China are missing from the list of invitees to the virtual event that is slated to take place on December 9 and 10.

Egypt and Turkey (a NATO member) — allies of the United States — do not appear on the list either. The Middle East will be represented by only two countries — Israel and Iraq.

All EU member states except Hungary were invited as well. As for the countries of the former USSR, the list includes:

  • Ukraine,
  • Armenia,
  • Georgia,
  • Moldova,
  • Lithuania,
  • Latvia
  • and Estonia.

Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan are not among the participants.

It appears that the Biden team works to create a global coalition to discredit and oppose the "authoritarian" nations of Russia and China. This is a weak position by design, because it divides the world into friends and foes.

Russia can find a common cause with any regime, be it "democratic" or "authoritarian" — this regime needs to meet Russia's national interests for successful cooperation.

Democracies vs. authoritarian regimes concept does not withhold criticism

Conceptually, the division of the world into democracies and authoritarian regimes does not stand up to scrutiny. China has its own democracy — the power in China changes every ten years. The same is with Turkey — this is a highly democratic state in terms of the electoral system. The Turkish administration pursues its terrorists, but the United States has its terrorists of its own too, provided, though, that a terrorist in Turkey may not be considered as such in the United States.

What is the issue about Hungary? In the EU, Poland is also considered a country that lacks the rule of law, but Poland was invited to Biden's virtual summit. The reason behind the decision not to invite Hungary is simple. Hungary declared war on Soros propagandists who jeopardise the Hungarian democracy. Poland appears to be the main conductor of US interests in Europe. Even if Poland stands up against LGBT and gay marriage issues, Poland will be on Biden's team.

Will Armenia play for Biden's team?

Armenia is clearly "lucky”, it is the only one of the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union that was invited. Biden's invitation, however, will make Nikol Pashinyan face a difficult choice — either be present and quarrel with Moscow or ignore the summit and annoy Biden. Armenia could be a Russian spy at the summit, and this is not a joke. The Armenians used to justify themselves so after taking part in NATO programs and summits.

In a commentary for Pravda.Ru, political scientist Karine Gevorgyan noted that she could not predict whether Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan would be present at the summit.

Armenia is a member of the Interparliamentary Assembly of Orthodoxy, but, like Georgia and the Baltic states, it joined the Alliance for Religious Freedom, which was organized by the United States, she said.

The Summit for Democracies is doomed to fail

According to Karine Gevorgyan, the summit will not lead to any achievements for either the world or the United States. The purpose of this forum was announced on the inertia of the erstwhile paradigms, which are now falling apart like a house of cards.

"As Biden said, all problems in the world, if translated into simple language, can be solved only by three powers: the United States, Russia and China," the political scientist clarified.

We would like to add here that the Summit of Democracies is doomed to failure because "authoritarian” regimes are often more effective than "democracies”. It goes about not only China here, but also the Gulf countries and Vietnam, for example. Therefore, when Western politicians say that authoritarianism does not bring prosperity to its people, it comes contrary to the real state of affairs in the world.

Is the United States a democracy?

Democracy as a solution to inequality, corruption and poor economic governance will simply not resonate.

After all, "Who are the judges?" Here are just a few signs of American authoritarianism and corruption:

  • Donald Trump was bullied and demonised in the media;
  • there were tons of vote manipulations and record amounts of untracked money in the 2020 presidential election;
  • common Americans were denied the right to enter Congress and talk with people's representatives, as it happened on January 6;
  • terrorists' money can be laundered easily via banking fraud;

What makes you cool, American bro?

nuclear brinkmanship...

By Caitlin Johnstone, an independent journalist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her website is here and you can follow her on Twitter @caitoz

A provocative US threatens to move nukes to Poland, ignores Moscow's 'red lines', and stokes its cold war rhetoric against China. Why is Washington always so belligerent and happy to take the world to the brink of Armageddon?

While mainstream Western media have been spending their time trolling about a missing Chinese tennis player who is not actually missing, hardly any coverage has gone toward NATO’s announcement that if the new German government does not continue to allow US nuclear weapons on its soil, those weapons will be relocated to the east of Germany. This would put them closer to Russia’s border, a major provocation of Moscow and yet another step forward in the Western empire’s steadily escalating game of nuclear brinkmanship.

“Germany can, of course, decide whether there will be nuclear weapons in (its) country, but the alternative is that we easily end up with nuclear weapons in other countries in Europe, also to the east of Germany,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said last week.

“Should NATO decide to move U.S. nuclear weapons to Poland, for example, that would likely be seen as a step towards angering Moscow by bringing them closer to the Russian border,” Reuters reports.

Meanwhile, the US is considering sending more weapons to Ukraine as tensions mount between Moscow and Kiev, and Vladimir Putin is warning that Western powers are ignoring Russia’s red lines which are meant to serve as a deterrent to prevent escalation into full-blown nuclear war. The cold war against China has been continually ramping upas well and appears likely to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

Half of Americans would now reportedly favor going to war against Russia in defense of Ukraine, and a majority would now favor going to war with China in defense of Taiwan. These drastic spikes in opinion are not an accident; the consent has been forcefully manufactured by an aggressive propaganda campaign against those two nations. They are not manufacturing that consent for fun; they are doing it for a reason.

A majority of Americans support going to war with Russia over Ukraine, and to war with China over Taiwan. Church attendance may be down sharply, but millenarian dreams are stronger than ever here. And who can blame us? Shit jobs, shit lives—who wants to go on living like this? pic.twitter.com/OszuFZd0Sw

And I just keep tripping on how weird it is that so few people see the US empire’s headlong charge into cold war conflict with two separate nuclear-armed nations as the single most urgent concern of our day. It probably doesn’t even make most people’s top 10. Very few people seem to believe the most pressing threat to humanity might be all those Armageddon weapons we’ve been stockpiling and how increasingly irresponsibly our leaders are treating them.

I write about this issue a lot because to me it seems obvious that when you really look at the facts of the matter, it’s the most worrying thing of all worrying things in this world. It is entirely possible that climate chaos causing heat spikes and flash freezes which destroy plant life could be the thing which sends us the way of the dinosaur, or it could be the reckless development of weaponized artificial intelligence, but those fates are a bit further down the track. There’s only one threat facing us which could technically wipe us all out tomorrow, and it’s the rapidly increasing likelihood of boring old nuclear holocaust.

I write about it a lot, but it’s never shared particularly well. I could get a lot more traction telling people the most urgent threat of the day is government abuses related to Covid, or white supremacists, or one of the two mainstream political factions which so much energy goes into amplifying the enmity between. But when I write about what I see as the actual greatest threat to our world, it’s like yelling into the wind. People don’t want to hear it. My words get swallowed up by a big black hole in the ground and their energy just kind of fizzles.

A big part of it is probably due to the fact that this isn’t something which fits neatly into any of the partisan filters we’ve been trained to view the world through. Detente is no longer an issue promoted by the mainstream parties which present themselves as the ‘left’ end of the spectrum; when aggressions against Russia or China come up, it’s usually in an argument over which one we should hate more. Nobody’s self-reinforcing ideological social media echo chamber is going to help them amplify the message that we’re getting way too close to nuclear war; it’s even a back burner issue for most socialists and anti-imperialists.

Detente: The Vital Word Missing From Discourse On Russia And ChinaA recent 60 Minutes interview with Tony Blinken illustrates the way the concept of detente (the easing of hostilities between nations) is being deliberately hidden from public awareness.https://t.co/CvrodmLr8H

— Caitlin Johnstone ⏳ (@caitoz) May 5, 2021

Another reason is that people simply aren’t being told about the rising threat of nuclear war with any regularity. Western mass media exist first and foremost to protect and promote the interests of the US-centralized empire, and it’s in that empire’s interests not to have the public too keenly aware of the fact that it is gambling the life of every terrestrial organism on geostrategic agendas of unipolar global domination.

Another part of it is just garden-variety psychological compartmentalization from an uncomfortable idea; nobody likes to think of everyone they know and love being vaporized or dying of nuclear radiation.

Another part might be because people simply cannot wrap their heads around the idea of billions of people dying and what that would mean. It’s been pointed out that most people lack an intuitive understanding of how much more a billion is than a million, which is often cited to highlight the extreme difference between a billionaire and a common millionaire. But it also applies to human lives; we can barely wrap our minds around the idea of a million lives having been snuffed out in the Iraq invasion, much less billions perishing in nuclear war.

People don't have a strong intuitive sense of how much bigger 1 billion is than 1 million. 1 million seconds is about 11 days. 1 billion seconds is about 31.5 years.

— Paul Franz (@Paul_Franz) August 3, 2018

Perhaps the biggest part of it, though, is the fact that this threat has been around a long time. I can’t tell you how many older people I’ve had pish-poshing my concerns saying “Bah, I remember doing duck-and-cover drills as a kid! Turned out to be a whole lotta nothing.”

But it was never nothing. We came extremely close to wiping ourselves out multiple times in the cold war between the US and the Soviet Union because nuclear brinkmanship is an inherently unpredictable affair with far too many small moving parts to control, any one of which could set off an apocalyptic chain of events due to something as simple as miscommunication, technical malfunction, or misinterpretation by any of the thousands of individuals involved amid the chaos and confusion of escalating aggressions.

It just doesn’t sit well with people’s understanding of the world that it could all end through the same nuclear Armageddon scenario their grandparents used to worry about. If two men were holding guns to each other’s heads, it would be experienced as very dangerous at first, but after a while, if nobody pulled the trigger, the emotional tension would begin to diminish. If years went by and the men got older it would diminish even further. If they got so old they couldn’t hold the guns anymore and had their children take over for them, and then their children’s children years later, the emotional experience of the standoff would be all but forgotten.

But the guns never got any less deadly. And now the grandchildren of those who initiated the standoff are starting to get careless.

The Day The World Ended"Then it happened. A nuclear weapon was deployed by one side, setting off a chain reaction that had been set in place ready to be triggered long ago, from which there was no coming back. And the funny thing is, it was an accident."https://t.co/JzMKlrV4oY

— Caitlin Johnstone ⏳ (@caitoz) April 27, 2021

I keep having this scene go through my head where something happens and the nukes start flying and everyone’s surprised, because of all the things they’ve been herded into worrying about, the idea that actual nuclear war could happen was nowhere near the forefront of their awareness. And someone looks out the window and sees a mushroom cloud growing on the horizon and says, “What?? This is how it all ends? With all those weapons we’ve been deliberately building with the full knowledge that they can end it all?”

I mean, how stupid would we feel for having missed that one?

And now there’s a massive push to weaponize space to stay ahead of Russia and China, opening up a whole new dimension of unpredictable moving parts where things can go cataclysmically wrong. You’d think our place on such a precipice would be drawing us all together, but because we’re so manipulated by such deeply malignant forces, we’re instead more divided than ever.

pathologically disconnected...

ANY DEMOCRATS, LIBERALS, traditional conservatives, and even some leftists continue to tell themselves that the election of Joe Biden was the first step toward restoring U.S. standing in the world after the damage caused by Donald Trump. And in a variety of ways — many stylistic and some substantive — that perspective has merit. But when it comes to national security policy, the U.S. has been on a steady, hypermilitarized arc for decades. Taken broadly, U.S. policy has been largely consistent on “national security” and “counterterrorism” matters from 9/11 to the present.

The ascent of the charlatan businessman Trump to the presidency in 2016 was a logical — if somewhat on-the-nose — plot twist in the U.S. imperial saga that managed to distill many truths about this nation into a four-year televised and live-tweeted debacle.

The continued media drumbeat that Trump remains the gravest enduring threat to U.S. democracy is fueled by legitimate concerns over Trump’s frantic efforts to use the office of the presidency to overturn the election results, which came to a head with the violent demonstrations at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. These dangerous actions, taken in concert with ongoing Republican efforts at voter disenfranchisement and the peddling of false conspiracy theories, merit serious concern. The Trumpist movement, especially its members in Congress, poses a clear threat to the democratic process. But even in the face of this threat, the bipartisan imperial consensus was so strong that the Democrats continued to increase Trump’s national security powers throughout his presidency.

The bipartisan imperial consensus was so strong that the Democrats continued to increase Trump’s national security powers throughout his presidency.

This reflexive bipartisan militarism stands in stark opposition to the Democratic Party’s sweeping and fallacious rhetoric that the bad face of the U.S. emerges only when Republicans seize executive power — and that the sole remedy is electing Democrats. Civilian victims of Barack Obama’s drone strikes might have another view. Before Trump, according to Democratic doctrine, the evils of U.S. policy originated with George W. Bush and his “co-president” Dick Cheney. Yet under both Trump and Bush, the rhetoric from many Democrats was pathologically disconnected from their support for ever-expanding militarist and surveillance policies.

The Democratic party, in its self-tailored version of history, has always been a steadfast force of resistance against GOP excesses and abuses. The Democrats appear to see no contradiction between fighting Republican attacks on voting rights and their own enthusiastic embrace of empire in foreign policy. Without support from the leadership of the Democratic Party — and votes from rank-and-file congressional Democrats — many of the worst national security policies of the past two decades would have been impossible to implement or would have required enormous political battles or an even greater, and abusive, use of executive power to accomplish.

If the Democratic Party offered a true resistance to the GOP, the history of the post-9/11 world would be very different. Instead of California Democrat Rep. Barbara Lee standing as the lone vote in the entire Congress against the Authorization for the Use of Military Force — the “blank check” for global war — days after September 11, 2001, we would have seen the majority of Democrats join her in a chorus of opposition and restraint. Sen. Russ Feingold, Democrat from Wisconsin, would not have been the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act. The legislative authorities for the Iraq War would have been thwarted without the support of a majority of Democratic senators: 29 voted in its favor, including the current president. Without that backing, the Bush-Cheney administration would have had to openly and publicly own its maniacal belief that when it comes to “national security” policy, the executive branch can and should function as a de facto dictatorship.

While a vocal minority of Democrats spent much of the two terms of the Bush administration fighting against the Iraq War and the grave human rights abuses being committed by the CIA and military, the leadership of the party consistently abetted the Bush-Cheney agenda. When it mattered most, the party failed to offer more than meager protests. After the Democrats gained a House majority in the 2006 midterm elections, incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made clear there would be no accountability at the highest levels of power. “I have said it before and I will say it again: Impeachment is off the table,” Pelosi asserted. “We pledge partnerships with Congress and the Republicans in Congress, and the president — not partisanship.”

There is an understandable tendency to view the past 20 years of U.S. militarism as a defining era unto itself. And, in some crucial ways, the full spectrum of U.S. responses to the September 11 attacks did alter the world and, with it, the U.S. way of war. But at their core, the most consequential actions emanating from Washington, D.C., after 9/11 were already in motion. The Bush administration came to power with an eye toward regime change in Iraq. But it did so emboldened by the bipartisan vote during Bill Clinton’s tenure that made regime change official U.S. policy, backed up by constant bombings of Iraq throughout Clinton’s two terms. Even Bernie Sanders, then a House representative, supported that bill, which was largely the work of the neoconservative Project for a New American Century. Under Clinton, the U.S. was already moving toward a system of remote lethal strikes and small wars, though it was much more reliant on legacy systems like cruise missiles rather than the now ubiquitous armed drones. The precursor of the Patriot Act was passed with significant support from both parties, with Biden serving as one of its lead architects, a fact he regularly and proudly cited. The U.S. was already operating a well-oiled economic warfare machine with its use of crippling sanctions in an effort to overthrow governments or punish populations into submission.

The most significant milestones of the past two decades lie in the synergy that exists among the various political factions between U.S. elections.

In its malignant genius, the Bush-Cheney administration — stacked with career hawkswho knew how to work the levers of power — saw opportunity in the rubble of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They saw the value of tapping into the rage, shock, and, most importantly, fear that gripped the nation in the aftermath of the terror attacks to accelerate the implementation of their agenda. The Democratic Party willingly folded itself into the Bush administration’s aspirations and bestowed upon it sweeping war and surveillance powers. The most significant milestones of the past two decades lie not with the victories of extroverted villainous Republicans like Bush or Trump, but in the synergy that exists among the various political factions between U.S. elections.
