the reduction dilemma...

chinachina

Global shoppers face possible shortages of smartphones and other goods ahead of Christmas after power cuts to meet official energy use targets forced Chinese factories to shut down and left some households in the dark.

Key points:
  • China is facing widespread power shortages after vowing to cut its energy intensity to meet climate goals
  • Widening power shortages have halted production at numerous factories during one of their busiest seasons
  • The fallout has prompted some analysts to downgrade their 2021 growth outlook

In the north-eastern city of Liaoyang, 23 people were hospitalised with gas poisoning after ventilation in a metal casting factory was shut off following a power outage, according to state broadcaster CCTV. No deaths were reported.

Factories were idled to avoid exceeding limits on energy use imposed by Beijing to promote efficiency.

Economists and an environmental group say manufacturers used up this year's quota faster than planned as export demand rebounded from the coronavirus pandemic.

A components supplier for Apple's iPhones said it suspended production at a factory west of Shanghai under orders from local authorities.

Fallout expected to impact GDP

The disruption to China's vast manufacturing industries during one of their busiest seasons reflects the ruling Communist Party's struggle to balance economic growth with efforts to rein in pollution and emissions of climate-changing gases.

"Beijing's unprecedented resolve in enforcing energy consumption limits could result in long-term benefits, but the short-term economic costs are substantial," Nomura economists Ting Lu, Lisheng Wang and Jing Wang said in a report.

blah blah blah...

During a speech at the Youth4Climate summit in Milan, Italy, Thunberg criticized the slogans which have been frequently used by US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and other world leaders.

“Build Back Better, blah blah blah. Green economy, blah blah blah. Net zero by 2050, blah blah blah… Climate neutral, blah blah blah,” Thunberg declared. “This is all we hear from our so-called leaders. Words. Words that sound great, but so far have led to no action.”

“Our hopes and ambitions drown in their empty promises,”she continued, arguing that the fight against climate change is more than just “politically correct” slogans intended to make people feel better while no considerable action is taken.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg mocks platitudes and talking points coming from Biden and other global leaders:“Blah, blah, blah. Build Back Better. Blah, Blah, Blah. Green economy. Blah Blah Blah.” pic.twitter.com/GSoi8PWd6X

It’s not the first time that Thunberg has torn into world leaders and politicians, having famously delivered a fiery speech at United Nations Climate Summit in 2019 where she accused leaders of caring only about money and “eternal economic growth.”

“People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!” she declared at the time, pointing out that the science of climate change has been clear for “more than 30 years.”

Thunberg also questioned whether world leaders who say they “understand the urgency” and yet keep on “failing to act” could be considered “evil.”

The British prime minister is seeking to fashion himself as a switched-on leader on climate change – but isn’t it all just more hot air and bluster from one of the world's biggest confidence tricksters?

Boris Johnson was doing his best Greta Thunberg impression at the United Nations yesterday.

According to BoJo, we have been acting like a 16-year-old and “it's time for humanity to grow up.” Interestingly, Greta was only 16 when she told the UN that “you have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words,” and yet for some reason, everyone listened to her.

Boris also said that the world has just 40 days “to come to Glasgow to make the commitments necessary” to save the planet. And if we don’t, “our grandchildren will know that we are the culprits … and that we missed our cue, and they will ask what kind of people we were to be so selfish and so short-sighted.”

If he carries on making alarmist statements like this, he’ll end up gluing himself to the M25 or peppering the City of London with red paint.

non-comparable figures...

China's President Xi Jinping didn't make it to the Glasgow talks, instead addressing the global climate conference from home.

The absence of the leader of world's biggest emitter was noted by US President Joe Biden, who cast doubt over China's commitment to emissions reduction.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison regularly highlights the sheer volume of China's emissions and its central role to tackling the global issue of climate change.

He cites it as evidence of Australia's relatively small contribution to the problem of global warming, providing himself with a rationale for not introducing more ambitious emissions reduction plans.

But just how do the emissions of China and Australia stack up? And how does it affect the global climate talks taking place in Glasgow?

What are China's emissions and how do they compare to Australia's?

In 2020, China emitted 13.8 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide and equivalent greenhouse gases. That's 13,800,000,000 tonnes.

By comparison, Australia emitted 512 megatonnes, which is 512,000,000 tonnes.

If all of the zeros are making your eyes water, we can put it another way that has a few less: China emits about 27 times more greenhouse gases than Australia.

Climate Watch — a project by the World Resources Institute and used by the World Bank — keeps a database on national emissions that is based on a wide range of sources.

Its most comprehensive comparison is based on 2018 data. It shows China as the biggest emitting nation, responsible for 23.9 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Australia ranks as the 16th biggest emitter, responsible for 1.3 per cent.

China emits far more than Australia but, per person, Australia is much worse

The sheer volume of China's emissions is in large part due to its population size.

Using the same 2018 figures, emissions per capita — that is, emissions per person — in China is 8.40 tonnes.

In Australia it is 24.79 tonnes per person, one of the top 10 emitters in the world, behind oil-dependent countries such as Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait.

China's per person emissions are closest to those of Slovenia and Zimbabwe.

By way of comparison, the United States emits 17.74 tonnes per capita.

Etc... But we also have to include in "our" own Australian tally of emissions is the amount of coal that we have sold to China, coal that is now in the form of CO2 in the atmosphere... It is our responsibility.

Also note that 94 % of Chinese live on the fertile half of the country, while only 6 % live on the Western half... possibly for the same reasons that Australians live on the fringes of the continent: deserts. For China, the main ones are the Gobi desert, the Tibetan plateau and the Taklimakan desert...
