and talking of smelly fish .....
from somewhere in the ether ….. Greens criticise Navy engagement rules for illegal fishers The Greens have raised concerns for the safety of illegal fishermen operating in Australian waters following a Federal Government move to allow the Navy to fire on illegal boats. Defence Minister Dr Brendan Nelson says the rules of engagement have been rewritten so the Navy has the power to shoot at illegal fishing boats as a last resort. Dr Nelson says the Navy would be able to fire on boats that failed to stop when directed to and will also be allowed to use pepper spray and tear gas in confrontations in Australian waters. Dr Nelson says the aim would not be to sink a vessel but to disable the boat by striking the engine or rudder. Greens Senator Rachel Siewert says Dr Nelson has taken it too far and believes the Government is not exhausting all the relevant options.
