For most of its history, trade and foreign policy did not create dilemmas for the Australian ruling classes. Until the Japanese invasion of Singapore in 1941 Australia regarded its trade and foreign policy interests with the United Kingdom to be synonymous. The rapid collapse of the British Army in Asia shattered that pipe dream. Thereafter, Australia looked almost exclusively to the United States as its guarantor of security.

This was formalized in the Australia, New Zealand, and United States (ANZUS) Treaty signed in 1951. It has remained the linchpin of Australia’s defence posture ever since.

That the treaty is actually no more then a promise to “consult” in the event of an attack upon one of the parties did not prevent it from becoming the cornerstone of Australia’s defence policy for the whole of the post World War II period from the date of its signature up to the present.

The Block’s Scott Cam has taken a job working for the Prime Minister but it’s not renovating parliament house.

Australia’s two highest-profile Scotts will be joining forces to build the number of tradies in the nation, with Scott Morrison enlisting Scott Cam to get more young people on the tools.

The prime minister has announced the host of TV renovation show The Block will be Australia’s first national careers ambassador.

The Gold Logie winner’s role will be to highlight how practical and technical training can lead to high-paying and fulfilling jobs.

Mr Morrison said university, which had become the default expectation for young people, wasn’t the only path to success.

“I want to see more Australians become plumbers, electricians and bakers than lawyers and consultants. I would like to see more of them going on to become their own boss,” he said on Thursday.

It has to be said that the Liberal (CONservative) Party, that of Scummo, did all it could over the years to destroy TAFE, a public training facility for trades, by turning some of its sections into "private enterprises" that failed and ran away with the public cash. As well, the Liberal (CONservative) Party, that of Scummo, has done all it could to destroy unionised labour, which to say the least was a training ground for aprentices to learn a trade, including the secrets and manual tricks of trades — not just the "bad will" (demanding fair pay, weekend rates, women equal wages, etc), often pinned by lying pollies and salivating media on Trade's Hall...

And the Primal Scummo should not say "I want" like a bully brat demanding respect, while robbing you of your marbles...
