Having recently decided that the mainstream media was not a place to get quaility information anymore I began to feverishly buy any books I could find on political and social issues. Having enjoyed some of Michael Moore's scathing observations of America I was pleased to come across your recent publication which has a similiar message pertaining to Australia.
For fifteen years I have been a stress therapist and have chaired a self awareness group. The experience was enriching in many ways, but I was left rather jaded. What I learned was that only about 1 in 20 people have really developed past the level of selfishness that one sees in a new born baby. Once a child discovers the needs of others he/she must learn to accomodate them and this could be be considered the beginning of real awareness.
This growth has become severely stunted in today's society and what gain there has been is usually lost again by the time an individual reaches middle age. (a person's politics moves towards the right as they get older etc.)
Sadly, I have come to believe that the ethics and greed level of our politicians is simply a reflection of the average Australian. I think your book is an inspiration for the lucky number of people who still have their eyes open, and I am very thankful for that ( in the land of the blind, the one eyed are Gods). I do not consider myself particularly intelligent and have been hampered with an average I.Q., but I hold the unsatisfactory belief that 80 percent of Australians (not that this number would even come close to reading non-fiction ) would simply not be able to follow or retain much of your book's content. We have become a body culture - feed it, watch it, admire it, make it comfortable and acceptable to others.
Please do not take my bleak portayal as discouragement. My gut belief is that there have always been illuminated individuals in any age (count yourself among them) but the peasants sure as hell didn't take any notice of their foresight - only the darker forces that found a need to suppress such people took much notice.
Here's the dilemma, stupid or misinformed people vote for stupid leaders and feel very right about that. How can we even begin to estimate the degree of change that needs to occur?
