awakening of the second fiddle...

albonese

Anthony Albanese has signalled Labor has gone too far in supporting the Abbott government’s national security agenda, particularly the new “draconian” restrictions on press freedom which would see journalists jailed for between five and 10 years.

Albanese, a senior Labor left figure, used a breakfast television interview on Sunday morning to break ranks with the opposition’s studied conflict aversion on national security, arguing the policy reform agenda, given its seriousness, needed less haste and more close scrutiny.

He said he did not want national security to become a partisan issue, but he argued Australians, residents of a liberal democracy, did not protect their freedom by giving it up. He said recent provisions criminalising the reporting of special intelligence operations might need to be wound back.

Albanese declared on Sky News that unlike many left wingers, he was “not a pacifist” – he said he deplored the activities of Islamic State, and strongly supported Australia’s military engagement in northern Iraq.

But he said he would have favoured more debate in the chamber prior to the deployment. A move by the Greens and by independent Andrew Wilkie to have parliamentary debate and approval prior to the deployment was largely rebuffed by the government.

“I’m of the view the government hasn’t been at its best when it comes to proper debate. I believe there should be more debate on the floor of the house of representatives, not up in the federation chamber, about our engagement [in Iraq],” he said. “When we put Australians at risk, that should be properly debated.”

forget the debate, just reject like the new laws like the crap they are...

Dear Labor – enough with the beige!...

It’s really hard to find someone who voted for Abbott’s Liberal government who is willing to justify their actions without mentioning the Labor Party. I also find Greens voters share this trait, in that they often position their support for the Greens as being ‘anti-Labor’, more so than they are ‘pro-Green’. When you also take into account the mainstream media’s obsession with Labor bashing, it’s clear why Labor is permanently on the counter-attack from a pincer movement of anti-Labor-for-this-reason-or-another-culture that dominates Australian political discourse. So when people like me try to defend my support for the Labor Party by explaining by deep attachment to the Labor Party’s values and policies that are intrinsically tied to these values, I get a constant barrage of criticism and abuse from the aforementioned pincer movement. It’s fair to say that being a Labor supporter in this country is a fairly unrewarding exercise.

So why does the Labor Party, whether in government or opposition, bear the brunt of so much disappointment, criticism and abuse? I think it’s because the party’s mission is such a difficult one that it’s seemingly impossible to live up to the huge weight of expectation placed on it through its promise to protect us all from the economy that we also rely on for the continuation of our society

he forgot to read the small fascist print...

Apparently Bill Shorten is asking Turdy Abbott to review the draconian laws about journalists revealing stuff the government wants to hide under false pretences... because Bill forgot to read the small print... Idiot...  Meanwhile Brandis assures us he'll be a perfect neo-fascist gentleman where Journalists are concerned:

Attorney-General George Brandis has sought to quell free speech concerns about the government's national security reforms by giving himself the power to veto prosecutions of journalists who publish details of undercover ASIO operations.

The decision follows a growing backlash against a law passed more than a month ago that includes jail terms of up to 10 years for anyone who discloses details about ASIO "special operations", during which the security agency's officers would have partial legal immunity in the event they have to break the law in the course of their work.

Amid concerns that the law could prevent journalists reporting on, say, botched special operations, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten wrote to Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Thursday asking that an independent watchdog on national security laws review the clause by the middle of next year.
