... Then there is history. In 1968, the Communist Party of Australia (CPA), under the leadership of Laurie Aarons, broke ties with the Soviet Union. In time, the CPA was wound up. In Victoria, the old anti-Moscow CPA collapsed into the Socialist Forum, which became part of the ALP.
In NSW, however, the CPA withered on the vine. But not all Communist Party members in NSW split with Moscow. The pro-Moscow communists formed the Socialist Party of Australia. Rhiannon joined the SPA in about 1970 and remained connected to the pro-Moscow communists until 1990, the time of the collapse of European communism. These days Rhiannon refuses to answer questions about her activities in Eastern Europe in the 1970s and 1980s and, in particular, whether she attended the International Lenin School in Moscow in 1977. But it is little wonder she and some of her colleagues annoy such Labor MPs as Michael Danby, Eric Roozendaal and others on the Labor Right, including Howes. They regard the Greens not as an environmental movement but, rather, as a leftist organisation that is opposed to social democracy. Rhiannon's hostility towards Israel is another bone of contention, since Labor has supported Israel from the time when Ben Chifley was prime minister. Some Labor supporters have always opposed the 2010 ALP-Greens agreement. That's no myth. They are beginning to speak out now.
Gus: see my comment "it ain't goin' to happen..."... What the ALP pollies I know often say "The ALP is a broad church..." I know many Labor supporters who have defected to the Greens... Like all political parties, people join and become pollies with ambition of some kind or another until the "democracy within" calls the shots... Presently, an ALP alliance with the Greens is better and smarter than nothing...
A federal Western Australian Labor MP has called on her colleagues to stop attacking the Greens, saying the outrage was "a confected non-issue" that was playing into the hands of the Coalition.
Melissa Parke stepped up her calls this morning after saying yesterday the NSW Right, which has led the attack on the Greens, had more to do with Labor's current woes than anyone else.
Ms Parke, who belongs to the Left faction, told the National Times today that the "Greens bashing must stop".
"It's a confected non-issue. The Greens have, along with the independents, helped Labor pass an enormous amount of legislation through the Parliament," she said.
"This sniping within the progressive side of politics is a gift to Tony Abbott. It is mutually assured destruction."
