remember when...

populationMAD

from Gus's collection of stuff... Joyce could be the kid with the air sickness bag on Qantas...

populate and perish...

On the face of it, it seems like a logical idea. Unfortunately however, population policies are being used as a way to avoid the real issue our country needs to grapple with, our consumption and production problems. Population discussions tend to fall into two categories; (1) migration and (2) lower fertility rates. Let's have a look at each of these issues by themselves.

....

If we want to become a sustainable society we cannot put all our focus on to our population - we need to have smart policies that tackle the real root causes of our problems; the way we use resources, not the number of people who use them.

Ahem... This fellow is writing half-crap... No matter how smart we consume, an increasing population is also going to consume more crap and... SPACE. And I do not mean the void between here and the dark side of the moon, but the SPACE as in the surface we need to support each individuals... On this little planet, there is a limit at which the compression of personal space — and that of the necessity to feed and entertain ourselves with things of nature (if it still exists by then) — that we cannot overshoot without dire concequences. Over population IS A PROBLEM. The Chinese knew that a long time ago.

Furthermore, if a "new approach" to technology was blinding us with evident simplicity, it would have been adopted a long time ago despite the resistance from the oil companies... Thus until we find a way to fiddle with ourselves and become livid and happy to live in a cupboard sized apartment to never venture out due to weather extremes, we're still under the influence of the "boom and bustiness equation" Xnext = rX(1-X).

Usually bustiness for humans has always had a war component in it... It could become ugly.
