The inspiring news in a week of political strife and tumult is that Kevin Andrews stands ready to lead the Liberal Party and the nation to broad, sunlit uplands. His bold challenge to Malcolm Turnbull last Wednesday surely dispels at a stroke the unkind perception of a sneering few that the member for Menzies is a prissy, extravagantly barbered dolt with a political tin ear.

Andrews's record speaks for itself. "I was successful in getting through the partyroom legislation that was unpopular," he told a door-stop news conference at Parliament House as the excitement mounted. Indeed so. Think of his trenchant opposition to stem-cell research, climate-change science, a woman's right to choose abortion, and homosexual partnerships. Marvel at his adroit carriage of John Howard's wonderful Work Choices reforms. Give thanks for his pursuit of the evil Dr Mohamed Haneef and his international Islamist conspiracy to have us murdered in our beds.

Kevin Andrews, carpe diem! A waiting people turn their eyes upon you.
