The US military conducts regular focus groups in five Iraqi cities. In December, right before Christmas, the Washington Post reported what the military was finding: 

"Iraqis of all sectarian & ethnic groups believe that the US military invasion is the primary root of the violent differences among them, & see the departure of 'occupying forces' as the key to national reconciliation, according to focus groups conducted for the US military last month. 

Few mentioned Saddam Hussein as a cause of their problems, which the report described as an important finding implying that 'the current strife in Iraq seems to have totally eclipsed any agonies or grievances many Iraqis would have incurred from the past regime, which lasted for nearly four decades - as opposed to the current conflict, which has lasted for five years.'" 

The studies aren't available to the public.  

And while the big story this week was about the military burying an independent study about the failures of Iraqi reconstruction, the fact that the military keeps its own research showing that Iraqis of all stripes think reconciliation, not full-blown civil war, will be more likely following a US withdrawal close to the vest is arguably a far greater sin of omission.
