Family-friendly Coalition policy a con: Democrats

The Democrats have labelled the family-friendly measures contained in the federal Coalition's new industrial relations policy as a con.

The Coalition has unveiled a range of promises, including allowing parents to take 52 weeks of unpaid parental leave and giving new grandparents one week of unpaid time off.

Democrats Senator Natasha Stott-Despoja says the Coalition has worked out it is vulnerable on issues affecting working families and it is trying a cheap trick to win them over.

"It really is a con because it doesn't address the key issues affecting working families and specifically working women, and that is the need for continual payment, preferably payment that is supported from outside by government, maintaining your superannuation as well as your attachment to the workplace," she said.
