pushed or jumped to save a CONservative seat?...Christian Porter bemoans the fact that there are few “constants” left in the political landscape and he and his supporters blame the media for his downfall (“Porter’s exit could save seat for Libs”, December 2). One of the constants used to be that ministers held themselves responsible for keeping to the highest ethical standards and would swiftly resign at the smallest deviation. Unfortunately without a powerful federal integrity commission, it’s been left to the media to hold a mirror up to the systemic failings of integrity in this government. The solution to the problem of “trial by media” is this government’s to implement – a federal integrity body with teeth. Elisabeth Goodsall, Wahroonga
Some former Liberal Party politicians such as Tony Abbott and Colin Barnett have expressed disappointment at Christian Porter leaving Parliament, intimating that he is a loss to politics. Let’s see, the historical rape allegations which he strongly denies aside, Christian Porter was very vocal in repealing the medivac bill thus causing further hardship to sick refugees. As attorney-general, he did nothing to stop the trials of witness K and Bernard Collaery who acted to expose Australia’s illegal bugging of East Timor in talks over oil resources. He contributed to a watered-down proposal for a federal anti-corruption commission and he accepted a large amount of money from an ‘unknown’ source to pay for his legal bills without revealing that source. A loss to Parliament? Leo Sorbello, West Ryde
Christian Porter’s statement that “there appears to be no limit to what some will say or allege or do to gain an advantage over a perceived enemy”, could be taken to mean that he believes that the rape allegation against him was not only false, but deliberately false and politically motivated. He needs to clarify this to avoid accusations of slurring the memory of his now deceased accuser. Alynn Pratt, Grenfell
At first I thought “great, Christian Porter’s leaving politics”, but then I realised he’s going to just pick up some incredibly high-paying gig in the private sector. What really changes? Libby Stock, Cumbalum
