Manufacturer Pacific Brands may be about to get millions of dollars in Federal Government grants, just days after it axed 1,800 jobs across Australia.

The majority of the job losses are in Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.

It has been revealed the company might be entitled to a refund for money it has already spent on research and development, and on manufacturing equipment.

The Government is pleading with Pacific Brands to keep as many jobs in Australia as possible.

The Maritime Union has welcomed news of talks between clothing company Pacific Brands and the Textiles Union.

It is also urging the company to do the right thing by taxpayers, the government and the workers.

Four firemen stripped to their underwear in Melbourne's CBD today to protest against Pacific Brands' decision to axe nearly 2,000 Australian jobs.

Hundreds of Pacific Brands workers rallied in Bourke Street to call for the company to reverse the decision.

The firefighters, who are members of the United Firefighters Union, drew huge applause when they stripped off their Pacific Brands-made uniforms to reveal Bonds boxer shorts while Men At Work's Down Under song played.

The firefighters held up signs that read: "Save jobs. Don't leave us naked".

Michelle O'Neil, the national secretary of the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Union, told the crowd there is one clear message for Pacific Brands.

"Save our jobs, reverse the decision. Keep the jobs here in Australia," she said.

"The workers I see in front of me, the members of my union are not a distraction, they're not clutter, they're not something for this company to dispose of like rubbish.

"These are workers that deserve fair treatment, they deserve respect, and they deserve dignity. And that's what we're fighting for."

Worker Julie Hargood told the crowd she has seen a lot of changes in the eight years she has been working with Pacific Brands.

"This is an Australian company and may be no more," she said.

"We want the company to listen to us and keep our jobs in Australia, not in China."

Pac Brands sackings beyond the pale: Rudd

The Federal Government will try to retrieve taxpayers' money given to Pacific Brands in view of the company's decision to slash 1850 jobs, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said on Friday.

Public outrage over the sackings, to be carried out over the next 18 months, is increasing as Pacific Brands prepares to send its manufacturing operations out of Australia.

"I think what Pacific Brands has done is, frankly, in so many respects, beyond the pale," Mr Rudd said on Fairfax Radio Network.

"In terms of the money they have got from the government, we will go through all of that in terms of what can be extracted back from them."

According to Michele O'Neil, national secretary of the Textile Clothing and Footwear Union, Pacific Brands had accepted $17 million from the federal government over the past two years.
