Northern Ireland to get an extra £1bn over two years as a result of deal, Foster says

Arlene Foster, the DUP leader, is speaking outside Number 10 now.

She says today she has reached an agreement with the Conservatives on support for the government in parliament.

The DUP’s guiding principle has been acting within the national interest, and enhancing the union, she says.

They have focused on enhancing prosperity, strengthening the union and working towards Brexit.

The details will be published in full, she says.

They have agreed to:

  • Keeping the triple lock for pensions
  • Keeping winter fuel payments for all pensioners
  • Keeping defence spending at 2% of GDP
  • Extending the armed forces covenant to Northern Ireland

There is also a financial package, she says. It is worth £1bn over two years. There will also be “new flexibilities” in terms of how £500m already committed to Northern Ireland can be spent, she says.

  • Northern Ireland to get an extra £1bn over two years as a result of the deal, Foster says.

Foster also says the government and the DUP will set up a coordination committee to oversee implementation of this deal.

the luck of the northern irish...

When one looks at the deal, it does not cost much to May... Half of it was already committed and the rest is only to sustain what is already in place... So my feeling is that DUP has been duped and that the Pommy public has been duded... But my accounting has always been suspect... so I could be wrong.

Now all what May can hope for is that global warming is a reality (she does not believe in global warming) as it could thin out the ranks of pensioners during summer heat-waves and make the winters so mild, the fuel subsidies will be minimal and reducing...

struggle over a pledge...

Britain's leader has found herself in a new struggle over a pledge made during the campaign to withdraw from the EU.

Labor MPs have pointed the finger at Prime Minister Theresa May for allegedly trying to prevent the much-anticipated vote to abolish the value added tax (VAT) on domestic fuel – something that The Independent described as "a key Brexiteer promise."

May is accused of relying on murky tactics in order to keep the MPs from making amendments to the 2018 budget and scrap their attempts to change the Finance Bill.

"Once again we have further evidence of the Government's unprecedented rigging of Parliament because they cannot rely on their backbenchers or the DUP [Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party]," Peter Dowd, the Shadow Treasury Chief Secretary, was quoted by The Independent as saying.
