South Australian Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has been stripped of the immigration portfolio, in a major internal reshuffle.

"I fought hard to keep the immigration portfolio, but ultimately it was a decision of the leader of the party," Senator Hanson-Young said in a statement after The Greens meeting in Melbourne.

Tasmanian Senator Nick McKim is the new immigration spokesman. He described it as a "massive honour" to take on the portfolio held by Senator Hanson-Young for nine years.

Under the reshuffle she will instead take on the broad-ranging education portfolio, along with finance and trade, water, arts and youth portfolios.

In education alone, she will handle early childhood, schools and universities.

"While I am disappointed, I understand that politics is a team game and will work tirelessly in my new senior portfolio areas of education and finance," she said.

Greens leader Richard Di Natale said the new portfolio arrangements would align Senators more closely with issues relating to their constituents.

CANBERRA -- The federal politician synonymous with the plight of refugees and who has sparred with seven Immigration Ministers, Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, has lost the immigration portfolio after nine years in the role.

The Australian Greens Party Room has shuffled portfolios Thursday just days ahead of the start of the 45th parliament.

The Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has described the moving of the South Australian senator as a "dumping" and "demotion."

sad...

South Australian Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young has criticised the move by Greens leader Richard Di Natale to dump her from the high profile immigration portfolio.

Key points:
  • Nick McKimm replaces Hanson-Young as immigration spokesperson in Greens reshuffle
  • Hanson-Young "incredibly sad" to lose portfolio
  • Di Natale defends move, says Greens asylum seeker policy remains 'rock solid'

On Thursday, Senator Hanson-Young was demoted to the trade portfolio after nine years as the Greens immigration spokeswoman.

Tasmanian Senator Nick McKimm, a relative newcomer who entered the Senate last year, was given the immigration portfolio in a Greens reshuffle.

"I don't agree with it, I don't accept it," she told AM.

In her first interview since being forced to change roles, Senator Hanson-Young said she was "incredibly sad" to move from an area she had put her "heart and soul into".

Senator Hanson-Young argued against losing immigration, but failed to convince Senator Di Natale.
