portrait of a speaker...

Bronwyn Bishop's political career may be in its death throes but her steely gaze will live on forever in the halls of Parliament House.

Taxpayers will be charged at least $30,000 to commission an artist to immortalise Mrs Bishop in an official portrait.

Despite resigning from the Speaker's chair in disgrace for using $5227 of taxpayers' cash to charter a chopper to attend a party fundraiser, Mrs Bishop is still entitled to the senior office holder painting.

She has now begun "preliminary conversations" with the Department of Parliamentary Services to decide on an artist.

"The standard fee for a portrait commission is $30,000," a department spokesperson said. "An additional sum of $2000 can be made available, if required, to assist the artist with framing costs."

Mrs Bishop, who did not respond to a request for comment, is tipped to lose pre-selection for her blue-ribbon Sydney seat of Mackellar next month.

It's understood her supporters have abandoned her in the wake of the chopper affair and her decision to vote against Tony Abbott in last year's leadership ballot. Aged care businessman Jason Falinski is considered frontrunner to replace her.

Secret polling conducted by MediaReach shows 69 per cent of Mackellar voters want her to retire. And if she did run, she would be trounced by businessman Dick Smith, who may run as an independent.

The portrait of another controversial former Speaker – Liberal turncoat Peter Slipper – could soon be on display.

Acclaimed artist Paul Newton has delivered his likeness of the controversial former MP, who spent just 19 days in the Speaker's chair before standing aside and eventually resigning over the James Ashby affair in 2012.

Parliament's Historic Memorials Committee has formally approved the painting – also costing $30,000 – and it's now being prepared and framed.

"A future date for the installation and unveiling of the portrait will be negotiated in consultation with Mr Slipper. No images of the portrait will be made available in advance of the official unveiling," the department said.

wipe out — canberra...

The former speaker Bronwyn Bishop is facing electoral annihilation in her New South Wales seat of Mackellar and could potentially be unseated by the businessman Dick Smith, a new poll shows.

In a survey conducted for News Corp, 21% of those polled said they would give their primary vote for Bishop, while 69% believed she should retire.

In contrast, 54% said they would give Dick Smith their primary vote if he contested the election, according to the MediaReach poll of 877 people in Mackellar on Monday.

Bishop resigned as federal speaker after a travel-entitlements scandal sparked by her $5000 taxpayer-funded helicopter flight from Melbourne to Geelong to attend a Liberal party function.

Smith has threatened to run as an independent in Bishop’s north Sydney electorate – which is a Liberal stronghold – if the former speaker is preselected.

painting with brighter colours than real life...

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has paid tribute to veteran Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop, whose parliamentary career is all but over after she lost preselection in her Sydney seat of Mackellar.

Former Liberal staffer Jason Falinski defeated Ms Bishop 51 to 39 in a meeting lasting five-and-a-half hours on Saturday evening, however the result will still need to be formally endorsed by the Liberal Party executive.

Mrs Bishop, who has held the seat on Sydney's northern beaches for 22 years, left last night's meeting with a group of supporters.

"It's been an honour to serve the people of Mackellar," she told reporters on her way out.

Mr Turnbull said it was a disappointing result for Mrs Bishop but thanked her for her "enormous" and "indelible" contribution to Australian public life.

C'mon ! Mal ! You know that Bonwyn was the worse ever speaker in the house of representative... and I mean EVER ! She was a smart cookie sure, but NEVER WAS SHE EVER FAIR NOR UNDERSTANDING of social values beyond charity given like crumbs that was designed to prop up her image... Sure, she had a heart of gold with no brains beyond politically staying alive.
