Bill Gates has been declared the richest man in the world for the 16th time by Forbes magazine's annual ranking of global billionaires.

The Microsoft founder once again beat Mexican businessman Carlos Slim to the top spot.

Mr Gates' net worth rose by just over $3bn (£1.94bn) in the year to 13 February, to $79bn.

There are a record 1,826 billionaires in the world, Forbes said, an increase of 181 in the past 12 months.

Mr Gates has now been top of the list for 16 of the last 21 years, Forbes added.

the block

The protesters insist they will not move until the Aboriginal Housing Company prioritises affordable housing for Indigenous people.

"The 62 affordable housing units need to be stage one of the project for us to leave," protest spokesperson Lisa de Luca told 702 ABC Sydney.

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy has been occupying The Block for more than nine months, delaying work on the $70 million retail and housing development known as the Pemulwuy Project which was due to begin last year.

Wiradjuri elder Jenny Munro has been camping at the site since May 26 last year, to demand more affordable Aboriginal housing on the land which was purchased by the Aboriginal Housing Company with a federal government grant in the 1970s.

"This is about black housing on black land," Ms Munro said.

"We have a right to [a] peaceful protest."

At the camp site on Eveleigh Street up to a dozen protesters are sleeping in the tents each night.

....

"DeiCota has good rental return and convenient location. The Aboriginals have already moved out, now Redfern is the last virgin suburb close to city, it will have great potential for the capital growth in the near future," stated the blurb on the Great Fortune Investments website.

As one can see, the DeiCota firm is lying through its teeth. The "Aboriginals" have not moved out... Their previous housing was not maintained by various authorities — and by various devious means, "Aboriginals" were pitted against "Aboriginals", in the typical "divide and conquer" method used by the Romans, especially under Julius Caesar.

Meanwhile:

One of Australia's longest-running Aboriginal land rights claim is facing another hurdle with no-one at the helm of an investigation into a $32 million pollution problem on the site and clean-up due to begin this month.

A federal parliamentary committee into pollution on Commonwealth Government land near Darwin was due to hold public hearings in the Northern Territory later this month.

But these hearings could now be put behind schedule.

The hold-up represents another blow to the Kenbi land claim, which was lodged 36 years ago in 1979 and has still not been fully resolved.

Months after the chairwoman of the committee's inquiry into the proposed $32 million remediation of the site resigned, a replacement member has not been elected.

A member of the committee told the ABC he was "not sure" why this had not yet happened.

Graham Perrett, the committee's acting chairman and a federal Labor MP, said it was an "unusual situation" that the committee was still without a chair while the inquiry into the remediation project was supposed to be getting under way, and with the project itself due to begin this month.

mining magnate mundine...

A company that was part-owned and directed by the federal government's chief indigenous adviser, Warren Mundine, helped broker a highly questionable deal that gave a mining company access to an Aboriginal sacred site in outback Western Australia.

The revelation raises questions about Mr Mundine's past business relationships and comes as he seeks to drive reforms to ensure good governance in Aboriginal corporations through his role as head of Prime Minister Tony Abbott's Indigenous Advisory Council.

Questions and answers: the full transcript

Documents show Indigenous Investment Management Pty Ltd, part owned by Mr Mundine at the time, was hired in 2010-11 by listed miner Reward Minerals to convince the Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation to drop its opposition to a mine at Lake Disappointment, a sacred site for the Martu people of the Pilbara.

victory for the poorest...

The Aboriginal Tent Embassy is preparing to walk away from The Block at Redfern in inner Sydney after the Federal Government arranged a $70 million deal that will see 62 homes built for Indigenous families.

In June, the protesters insisted they would not move until the land owners, the Aboriginal Housing Company (AHC), prioritised affordable housing for Indigenous people on the site.

The AHC insisted at the time the affordable housing could only be completed after a commercial development including retail outlets, offices and student housing had been completed to fund the community housing.

at the gates of hell...

Microsoft founder Bill Gates has called on Europe to stop demonstrating generosity towards asylum seekers to avoid an overwhelming migrant influx. He also advises European states to make Africans’ way to the continent much more difficult.

During an interview Germany’s Welt am Sonntag, Gates, one of the richest people on the planet, warned of the grave consequences of exceeding generosity towards refugees coming to Europe, whose numbers would only rise unless something is done.
