sydney siege ends in gun fire...

The gunman at the centre of a siege in Sydney's CBD has been confirmed dead after armed police stormed the cafe where he had been holding people hostage.

Loud explosions and yelling could be heard from outside the Lindt Chocolate Cafe in Sydney's Martin Place about 2:00am (AEDT).

Hostages ran from the building and paramedics treated and transported a number of them to hospital but their condition is unknown.

The man responsible was earlier named as Man Haron Monis, a self-declared Iranian cleric on bail for a string of violent offences.

The comment provoked criticism online, with Jim Roberts, executive editor of Mashable, typical of the responses: “3 people died in #Sydney hostage siege;@rupertmurdoch gloats about his newspaper’s coverage.”

Bruce Guthrie, former editor of both Murdoch’s Melbourne daily the Herald Sun, and its Fairfax competitor the Age, and now editorial director of the New Daily, summed it up as: “Dirty digger now gleeful ghoul.”

No comment about Mr Murdoch... It's crass enough of me to report on the matter. My only comment will be to express deep sadness at the outcome of the siege.

AFP admits 'non-definitive' database used to brief PM on Monis gun licence

Tony Abbott was forced to issue a clarification after wrongly claiming the Sydney siege gunman held a NSW licence


 

Documents released under freedom of information laws reveal that an agreement between Crimtrac and the state and federal police outlines that the database should not be used as a definitive reference point for information.

 

“Under this agreement it is acknowledged by all parties that information contained in the NPRS system cannot be considered to be definitive in nature,” the 2009 agreement said. “That is, data contained in PAPJ [participating Australian police jurisdictions] operational systems is accepted as the authoritative source pertaining to any person of interest and supersedes any data contained in NPRS.”
