Prominent Australians' Snowy letter given to Parliament

A letter signed by a group of prominent Australians calling for the sale
of the Snowy Hydro scheme to be suspended has been handed to Federal
Parliament.

The signatories include former
prime minister Malcolm Fraser, actor Cate Blanchett and poets David Malouf
and Les Murray.

Douglas Nicholas gathered the
signatures and he says the letter has also been delivered to the New South
Wales and Victorian Parliaments.

He says he does not believe it is
too late to suspend the sale, despite the Prime Minister's view that
although most Australians probably do not support the sale, it will
proceed.

"Right from the beginning, people have been telling me, 'sorry
mate this is a done deal'," he said.

"Look there have been too
many done deals in our country in the last few years.

"There have been too many
done deals and they've turned to dross - I'd rather use the more popular
word - but they've turned to dross in so many cases."

No sale...

From tthe ABC

Fed Govt withdraws from Snowy Hydro sale
The Federal Government will not sell its share in Snowy Hydro.

The joint owners of the scheme, the Federal, New South Wales and Victorian Governments had previously agreed to list the Australian icon on the stock exchange.

But the Prime Minister, John Howard, now says the Government has listened to community concern on the issue and will not sell its 13 per cent share in the scheme.

After the Prime Minister made the announcement the New South Wales and Victorian Governments also said they would not sell their shares in the scheme.

Mr Howard says the public is unhappy with the sale of the Snowy Hydro and there is no good public reason for why the sale should go ahead.

"It has never been part of my master plan to sell the Snowy," Mr Howard said.

Mr Howard says the Member for Eden Monaro, Gary Nairn, was crucial in persuading him and other senior Government members to take this decision.

"This decision has created a lot of unhappiness in the Australian community and across the political spectrum," Mr Howard said.

master plan .....

Well, if it wasn't part of the little rodent's "master plan", why did he agree to it in the first place?

Only a week ago he said: "I am aware that the
majority of people are probably opposed to this and I do listen. There are occasions where I
make decisions...which are based clearly on the majority view of the public,
and there are occasions when I don't. We believe the private sector is best at running businesses. Selling is the right decision. The Government is not disposed
to change its position."

Of course, the only "master plan" that the lying little rodent has ever followed is called "popularism" & that hasn't been going too well lately.

Our master, award winning, statesman was publicly spurned by his coalition girlfriend on the Potomac a couple of weeks ago & shunned by the Irish. His feeble attempt at "regime change" in the tiny Solomons failed miserably & the same clumsy effort in East Timor looks like going the same way.

Public response to the Budget hoopla was mute at best & even the great spectacle held for Todd & Brent drew a yawn from the restless populace.

"Master Plan"?

"Man Of Steel"?

Naa, simply spooked & running out of places to run & hide.
